Fr. Matthew and the St. Isidore Youth Delegate team represented our parish at the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis. In this newsletter series, our youth share reflections on their encounter with Christ in the Eucharist.
My favorite speaker was Sr. Bethany Madonna, who spoke on the first night of the National Eucharistic Congress.
She spoke about her call to sisterhood through the Sisters of Life, and how the journey hadn’t been easy. Sister Bethany shared what a priest had said to her when she was struggling with her vocation. He asked,
“Is Jesus asleep in your boat? If so, get him a pillow and just go along for the ride.”
It was such a simple way of explaining that feeling we all get when Jesus just doesn’t seem present in our lives. He’s not gone. He’s just asleep in our boat.
That stood out to me because there have definitely been times when Jesus was asleep in my boat. Sister Bethany’s speech was a profound reminder that even when we don’t feel Him, our Lord is always there.
I highly recommend watching Sister Bethany’s speech online, as this is only a small part of the larger talk.
Is Jesus asleep in your boat? If so, get him a pillow and just go along for the ride.
